The first three pictures, all from “Felicity Learns A Lesson,” an American Girl book published originally in 1991, all feature Elizabeth Cole as a young girl with dark hair and brown eyes.

The last three, taken from “Very Funny, Elizabeth!” (2005) show Elizabeth as being blond, with blue eyes.

This is incredibly upsetting, though it took a while for me to figure out why.

Eventually I realized that this is American Girl, a huge influence on my childhood, and a major company. American Girl fucked up.

They sell Elizabeth dolls that don’t match the original description. They publish books with a blond!Elizabeth on the cover. But Elizabeth is not blond.

If something so basic, a children’s company, can mess up like this and get away with it, what does that say for the integrity of the publishing industry? Of writers?

American Girl is not the only company to screw up descriptions, not by a long shot. But they are definitely among the most famous, and they market to the youngest children.

Messing up this way is awful and basically you should never do it u feel???

Allow me to help you. You’re dealing with two different editions of the books, one from before Felicity’s movie came out and one from after. Elizabeth was originally dark haired. The actress who played her in the movie was blonde and apparently too special to dye her hair or wear a wig so AG actually went through and altered canon to match the movies. I’m not fond of it either, but if you get a set of six books that are all in the same edition, Elizabeth’s hair color will be consistent across all of them.

AND THEN THEY SCHOOLED ME. I did not know Hawkgirl ever had her own miniseries. Not only did they inform me of that, but also who wrote and drew it, when it came out, and how many issues there were. They then proceeded to buy up all of our Hawkgirl, some silver age Flash, a bunch of our Batman merch, and then some.

One in particular told me that when she broke her shoulder, she had her physo-therapist put a picture of Hawkgirl up on the high wall so she could reach for it every day, to help her healing. Because, she told me, if Hawkgirl can swing a mace, she can too.

The first black American to win an Olympic gold was John Baxter Taylor, Jr., who ran in the 1908 Games in London. A member of the 4x400 U.S. Men’s Relay team (the rest of whose members were white), Taylor had been a dominating runner at his alma mater, the University of Pennsylvania. Taylor studied veterinary medicine at UPenn, and arrived at the Olympics only weeks after graduation. Interestingly, the 1908 Olympics marked the first contest that grouped competitors by country of origin, not sponsoring athletic club, which made Taylor technically the first African American to medal for the United States. Remarkably, both of Taylor’s parents had been born into slavery, working their way into Philadelphia’s black middle class after arriving in the city in the late 1800s. Taylor died from typhoid pneumonia just a few months after his arrival back to Philadelphia, at age 26, a tragic end for a promising athlete and scholar.
